8 SIMPLE WAYS TO WAKE UP, LOOKING GORGEOUS!

8 SIMPLE WAYS TO WAKE UP, LOOKING GORGEOUS!

While Sleeping Beauty had the right idea and a heck of a good deal for sleeping 100 years and waking up looking oh so fabulous, like neither an aging day passed her by during her slumber. However for us girls living in the 21st century there is still hope for us mere mortals to achieve ultimate chicness, while everyone else is busy dreaming away in sleep, you'll be tackling the best of both worlds in just half the time!

With a bit of willingness and a small amount of effort we can take our beauty routines to a whole new level, Read away to find out what your new bedtime routine, featuring soothing skin, luminous eyes, perfect waves, and more. All these tips will ensure you wake up looking amazing, meanwhile at the same time all the magic happens while you slumber, giving a whole new meaning to the term , beauty rest. These are just some of my favorite ways to prep before a good nights rest without doing much or even anything at all come sunrise..

1.Beautify: If you're a busy, multi-tasking gal like us, you know how hard it is to find the time to keep your hands and feet looking smooth, pretty, and hangnail-free when you can barely find the time to clean your apartment. For a pampering overnight treatment, apply Vaseline or this Organic foot balm to the soles of your feet and put on socks before you sleep. This way the socks help bind the moisture to your feet and you'll wake up to soft, smooth soles.

To prevent those annoying hangnails, simply hydrate cuticles overnight with coconut oil to both fingers and toes rubbing the excess onto the rest of your skin. To allow the oil to better absorb its best to first exfoliate or the ole fashion way, an all natural scrub consisting of honey,  sugar, and a little bit of water scrubbing the dead skin cells away and to take that a step further, wearing cotton gloves also gives the same effect the same effect that wearing socks gives to our soles can also be given to our hands, try this hand cream. Now all you need is a pair of strappy heels, cute jewelry, and the perfect nail polish to show off the "hard" work..

2.Primp: If you want to wake up with already luscious locks, the first step is to make sure that your strands are in peak condition. Maximizing on those eight hours to repair your hair with a fortifying mask is pretty dang convenient. To wake up with perfect waves, simply shower at night and style your mane before bed.

Allowing your locks to air dry until they're damp, and run some light styling creme through with your fingers. Depending of course on your hair type and what kind of waves you prefer, you can either sleep in braids or twist the hair into buns.

Don't be afraid to experiment. Upon waking the day after, all you'll have to do is rinse to get silky strands and air-dry or give yourself a quick blowout — no need to spend time with a flat iron when your hair is all shiny and moisturized! The next night, protect your sleek blowout by applying a small amount of serum to dry hair and cover your mane loosely with a silk scarf to prevent any frizz or tangles from forming while you toss and turn. Also key to prevent your hair from fuzzing out while you sleep: getting your chill on. As much as you may love feeling cozy at bedtime, sweat can cause small curls to form around your hairline, so keep that in mind when sleeping with a blowout.

3.Moisturize: Feeling overdue for a facial? There's no need to pay a ton of money for a professional treatment, or to spend a ton of time scrubbing and rinsing skin over the sink.

Simply put start out with a clean slate: wash off all the dirt, natural oils, and makeup with a gentle cleanser. Next exfoliate the skin , choose the best fit to suit your skin type and avoid causing irritation and dryness especially during the winter months.

Then to the ladies with dry skin, like myself, you may want to take note: Having a humidifier on just might change your skins life for the better. Turning one on before you sleep, especially during the cold winter months when the air is drier than usual, definitely works the magic it has to offer. Instilling the air with the much needed moisture that is missing in the air, reliving you from a parched dry throat other wise trapped in heat would cause, results in a more hydrated and plump look to your skin, all done while you sleep.

4.Wrinkle Prevention: Did you know that the type of pillow you sleep on can affect the way that your skin looks in the morning? I was at fault here too, I came to find this out a few months ago, and I'll never go back to another type ever again. To wake up with "Sleeping Beauty" worthy skin, you'll want to swap out your cotton pillowcase for one made of silk/satin, which will prevent lines and those weird sleep creases, it will lessen the pressure on your skin and help prevent hair breakage.

Talk about a two for one here! If you really want to go all-out with the princess treatment, something I like to call "beauty pillows" that are not only made of satin, but are also U-shaped to keep your pretty face perfectly elevated all night. But whichever pillow or sleep position you choose, it's still unanimous: if you want to wake up looking pretty, you're going to need to put in your hours 7-9 hours, so no cheating!

5.Whiten Teeth: For an easy DIY whitening treatment, try brushing with baking soda onto your pearly whites right before bed. Leave the mixture on for 5-6 minutes and make sure that you rinse thoroughly afterwards.

This is perfect for the evenings as a beauty treatment because in the waking hours, you would normally have to wait about 50 minutes before eating or drinking anything afterwards. Just be sure that you are only doing this treatment once a week because anymore you may allow the acid in the baking soda to break down your tooth enamel.

6.Brighten:Just think of how awesome it would be to naturally wake up looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and not a dark circle in sight!

To prevent unsightly puffiness and darkness around the eyes, applying an eye cream before bed to help encourage circulation around the eye area. Bonus points if you do a nice, mini massage to work the cream in before hitting the hay — it will get the blood flow going and help drain the excess fluid and flush out toxins that other wise would be there in the morning not bad for a few little adjustments, who knew.

It's best to apply any face products that have brightening ingredients like retinol and vitamin C in them during the night. Sunlight can actually aid in deactivating them and prevent them from working to their fullest potential which is something we definitely don't want to let waste we want to help our skin stay well hydrated and nourished with all the right ingredients so that well beyond our years from now we may be able to feel and look just as fab as you do now.

7.Lengthen Lashes: Give your fluttery fringe some TLC with this amazing DIY lash lengthening treatment. The secret ingredients? Castor Oil, Coconut Oil and Avocado Oil. These natural ingredients are rich in super hydrating omega 6 fatty acids, which help moisturize your lashes and prevent breakage. By using a clean spoolie after every use to prevent bacteria from forming, gently brush the concoction through your lashes each night. In the morning, just rinse with warm water using a gentle cleanser your face as usual. You should notice healthier, longer, darker lashes in just a few short weeks.

8.Repair: To help repair our tresses from daily styling and heat styling, smooth a leave-in conditioner into your locks before you snooze to wake up to shiny, soft, strands.

Apply it during the evening giving the treatment more time to deeply penetrate into your hair cuticles for optimum moisture, you allow the hair about 7-9 hours to be absorbed and when you awaken you have not but silky softness running through your fingers making it irresistible to the touch. This helps in repairing the split ends allowing them to start mending and helping them heal, but if you like creating your own the fusion of oils what I recommend are Coconut oil and Almond oil now these two know how to mend split ends, and keep you smelling ohh so delicious!

10 Things No One Ever Tells You About

10 Things No One Ever Tells You About

While we all aim for smooth and even skin, sometimes things don’t always go our way. At one point or another, most of us will have to deal with stretch marks, so it’s best to know the facts and face them head on. Whether you’re wondering how you got them, how to help them, or even how to hide them – we’ve got you covered. Below, you will find everything you need to know when it comes to tackling stretch marks, so you’ll never have to be self conscious about them again.

1. They happen in different places for different reasons. Stretch marks occur when the dermis, the middle layer of your skin, is stretched to a point where its elasticity begins to break down.  This then causes microscopic bleeding along with tissue inflammation, which gives us the raised reddish purple look of newly formed stretch marks.
2. Some people are more susceptible to them. Pregnant women, weight lifters, and adolescents are among those who are most likely to get stretch marks because of the changes their bodies go through during pregnancy, muscle growth, and puberty.
MORE: Why You Should Double-Cleanse Your Face
3. Genetics also play a big role. Stretch marks are also caused by genetics, so regardless of the circumstances, some people may just be prone to them. For this reason, you cannot completely prevent stretch marks, but they can be treated.
4. They are classified into two categories. Doctors identify stretch marks as either rubra or alba. At first, they appear as rubra, when they are pink, red, or purplish and inflamed. Over time, they turn silvery white, becoming alba.
5. Treat them early. When stretch marks reach the alba stage, they are fully mature so there is not much you can do. To reduce the appearance of new stretch marks, apply a Vitamin A oil or an over-the-counter cream with retinol once a day.
6. Try using a face cream. If you’re having trouble finding a body cream that contains retinol, opt for a face cream! While many body creams may not contain retinol, most face creams do.

7. Look for other key ingredients. Vitamin C and peptides both stimulate collagen, so products containing them can also help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Plus, they are safe to use during pregnancy, while retinol isn’t.
8. Self-tanner can help conceal. To make stretch marks completely vanish, there is always the option for laser treatment. However, self-tanner is a great alternative as it works wonders to camouflage stretch-marks and is also much a simpler and budget-friendly alternative.
9. Exfoliate. Since exfoliation helps remove old and worn out skin cells and replaces them with fresh new tissue, it’s also a great way to help get rid of stretch marks. For best results, practice regular exfoliation techniques using some essential oils such as tree tea oil, and a cleanser with both cleaning properties as well as an abrasive, twice a day.
10. Use massaging techniques. Not only should you just apply cream to the affected area, but you should use it to assist in massaging it as well. General massage techniques will help to break down the scar tissues that has accumulated and also increase blood circulation, which will help reduce the look of stretch marks.

HOW TO: SOFT FLAT IRON CURLS

HOW TO: SOFT FLAT IRON CURLS

These curls are done with a flat iron.  A huge part of getting your flat iron curls to turn out is using the right kind of flat iron! When picking out a flat iron that's good for curling, look for one that's skinny, has rounded edges, and gets somewhat hot on the outside of the plates as well.  For these curls I used the GHD Classic Styler.  Also, don't be fooled by those kiosks in the mall claiming their flat irons are the only ones designed to curl and straighten.  If a flat iron is skinny, has rounded edges and gets hot on the outside, you can curl with it.

1.  On dry hair, brush out any tangles.
2.  I always start curling at my part, but if it's easier for you, you can do it in sections and start in the back.  Either way, take a section about the size of the one I am holding.  3.  To start curling, place the flat iron about 3/4 of the way up the strand.
4.  Close the flat iron and twist it away from your face one time, then pull it slowly down the rest of the hair strand while it's still clamped shut.
5.  Your curl should look similar to this one, but if it doesn't, these tips might help:
*If your curl doesn't look this curly:  slide the flat iron more slowly down the hair strand, giving it more time to get each part of the hair hot enough.  You can also try taking a smaller section.  Flat iron curls also work best on clean, smooth hair.  If there is too much product or if it's too tangled it won't curl as well.
*If your curl is only curled at the very ends:  Spend more time curling at the top of the strand than at the ends.  I always hold the flat iron longer at the top because I want to make sure it's curled.
*If your curls are kinked:  Your gripping the flat iron closed too tightly.  You don't need to grip it really tight to get it to curl.  Try holding it closed a little more softly.
6.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 to curl the remainder of your hair.
7.  Once it's finished, it should look similar to this.
8.  To smooth the curls and make more of a wave, run a pick through your hair.
 9.  Once it's combed out it will look less curly and more wavy.
10.  I like my curls a little less bouncy than this.  If you want your curls not so curly, run the flat iron over the ends a few times until it has the amount of curl you want.
11.  This is how it looks after I flat iron the ends.
12.  Finally, get some pomade or wax on your fingers and run them through your hair to add more definition and body.  I am using Unite Second Day.

8 Foods That Help Your Hair Grow Faster

8 Foods That Help Your Hair Grow Faster

Whether you’re in the midst of trying to recover your strands from a misguided cut or simply want longer locks, you may have a hard time patiently waiting for your hair to grow. (We’ve been there.)
Luckily, unlike the watched pot that never boils, concentrating on your hair growth can yield actual results, particularly when it comes to strategic eating. Here are eight foods that make your hair grow, recommended by Harvard and Yale Medical School-trained nutritionist Jayson Calton, PhD, and licensed nutritionist and fitness chef Mira Calton, CN.

  1. Salmon: This fish is loaded with the strong hair supporters like Vitamin D and protein, but it also contains omega-3 fatty acids that promote hair growth by keeping your scalp healthy.
  2. Yellow Peppers: Yellow bell peppers have nearly five and a half times more vitamin C than oranges (341 milligrams, as opposed to 63). This is good news for your locks since vitamin C is an antioxidant that strengthens the hair shaft and hair follicles, as well as prevents breakage.
  3. Oysters: Zinc deficiency has been noted to cause hair loss and poor scalp conditions and oysters are loaded with zinc — just three ounces contain 493 percent of your daily value. But not just any oysters will do: Steer clear of the ones caught in the Gulf of Mexico, which may contain unusually high levels of Cadmium due to the 2010 BP oil spill.
  4. Eggs: Eggs are an excellent source of those aforementioned omega-3s, and they are also contain biotin (which many people trying to grow their hair take in supplement form). But, just so you’re aware, it’s not the egg white that will make your hair long and beautiful, it’s the yolk. Eating too many egg whites can actually block the absorption of biotin into the body, causing a depletion of this micronutrient.
  5. Sunflower Seeds: Just a few little seeds can supply you with an abundance of vitamin E, which will enhance blood flow to the scalp and promote faster hair growth.
  6. Sweet Potatoes: These are loaded with beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A that not only promotes a healthy scalp but  promotes hair growth. But choose foods loaded with beta carotene over supplementing with high doses — like over 2500 milligrams — of vitamin A from retinol since it can be toxic at very high levels.
  7. Avocados: Due to their high concentration of essential fatty acids naturally found in skin cells (which help to keep your skin smooth and supple), avocados are an age-old beauty secret. When topically applied to the hair and scalp, they have the added ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Mix a little avocado with sour cream (which contains lactic acid to help exfoliate dead skin and clean up buildup on the scalp) and apply to your hair and scalp for about ten minutes before washing it off.
  8. Almonds: These nuts will make your hair grow faster and thicker due to their high biotin content. One cup contains nearly one-third of your daily requirement. You should be able to see the results in a month or two of adding them to your diet.

10 tips to teach you how to curl your hair and make it last

Do you ever find yourself staring with envy at pictures of celebs, with their sexy, beach waves, and wishing you knew how to curl your hair and make it last more than 30 minutes?
I do.
In fact, since I wrote my 5 beauty tricks to make your face look thinner post a few weeks ago and discovered that sleek, straight hair makes your face look fatter, I have been obsessed with figuring out how to transform my dull, boring locks in beautiful, face-framing curls.
The good news is, with a little research and practice (okay, a lot of research and practice), I’ve finally figured it out, and today I’m going to teach YOU how to curl your hair and make it last.
You’re welcome!

10 tips to teach you how to curl your hair and make it last

1. IT ALL STARTS WITH YOUR HAIR CUT
I’ve always known thick, blunt ends won’t hold a curl, and that long layers work best for beach waves, but it wasn’t until I read how to make your curls stay by Hair and Make-up by Steph that I realized the health of your hair plays an important role, too. In fact, the more damaged and split the ends of your hair are, the harder it will be to curl your hair.

2. CUT BACK ON THE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
We all know that unwashed hair holds a style better than freshly washed hair (right?), but did you know that cutting back on the hair conditioner can also help your hair hold a curl better? No? Neither did I! All Woman Stalk tells you all about this, and more, with her tips to help you curl pin straight hair!

3. INVEST IN A GOOD DRY SHAMPOO
On the days when you’re skipping the hair wash, a little dry shampoo will do wonders in adding some volume and getting rid of any excess oil. I prefer Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo, but there are heaps of other options that work just as well.

4. ADD SOME TEXTURE TO YOUR HAIR
My hairdresser and I swear by Moroccan Oil Volumizing Mousse, but I’ve used lots of other (cheaper!) alternatives from our local drug store, and I’ve never had any issues. Just make sure to read the labels and find something that suits your hair type.

5. PROTECT YOUR LOCKS
Before you bust out the curling iron, make sure to apply a heat protector to your hair so you don’t damage it. I really like TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray because it’s inexpensive, smells good, and gets the job done, but I highly recommend checking out this list of the best heat styling products by totalbeauty.com to find the one that’s perfect for your locks.

6. MAKE SURE YOU’RE USING THE RIGHT CURLING IRON
For years, I always thought the 2″ barrel curling iron was the secret to sexy, curly hair, but after spending some time over on The Beauty Department, I finally know what size curling iron I should use. And guess what? After switching to a 1 1/4″ iron, my curls look better AND last longer!

7. USE THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE
I don’t know about you, but I need to see something in action if I have any hope in heck of figuring out how to do it. And that’s why I love Beauty High. They compiled this awesome list of the best YouTube curling hair tutorials, which are full of awesome tips and tricks to teach you how to curl your hair and make it last!

8. START FROM THE TOP
I always thought it made sense to clip my hair into different layers, and start curling it from the bottom up. That’s what I do when I straighten my hair, so it just seemed like the natural thing to do. But when I told my hairdresser this, he almost died of laughter before showing me how much easier (and quicker!) it is if you start from the top and work your way down. Live and learn, I say!

9. CRACK OUT THE BOBBY PINS
If I could only give you ONE piece of advice about how to get your curls to last, it’s this: roll each fresh curl around your finger, fasten it to your head with a bobby pin, and then, when all of your hair has been curled and pinned, spray with hair spray, leave for 10 minutes, and remove the curls one by one. I learned this trick after reading this AWESOME hair curling tutorial on Cosmopolitan, and it has been a life-changer for me. It takes me LESS time to curl my hair with this method, and the end result is always bouncier curls that last all day long.

10. NEVER FORGET THE HAIR SPRAY
Always lock in your look with hair spray. I prefer Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, but you’ll find heaps of fantastic options at your local drugstore. And don’t forget to grab a small bottle for your purse – you’d be amazed at what a little spray can do to revitalize your curls at the end of the day!

Do you have any tips on how to curl your hair and make it last more than 30 minutes?

101 Tips For a Better Hair Day

101 Tips For a Better Hair Day

Let’s face it: sometimes you wake up and your hair is perfect – it has never been better. But, there are some times when your hair is just not everything it could be, which can mean long styling sessions or total surrender without hope of recovery. We’ve all been there, but there is a better way.
We’ve rounded up a huge list of tips to help you manage your mane, which should lead to a string of better hair days. It doesn’t matter what kind of hair you have, here are some tips to get the hair you want.
101. When in doubt, braided hairstyles can be your friend on days where you might not want to fool with it. A quick waterfall or French braid across the front of your hair can take your bangs out of your eyes and into a chic style.
100. Trying to get your hair to grow? Herbal Essences celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan recommends Biotin to stimulate thicker, stronger hair and nails.
99. Another suggestion for getting your hair to grow? Manage your diet. Senior Stylist at Ted Gibson Salon Devin Toth recommend A and B vitamins (B6, B9, B12, and B complex/Folic Acid) to make sure your cells are working properly for a shiny, healthy mane.
98. If hair loss is your problem, Toth recommends increasing your intake of vitamins C, E and zinc to help your body naturally repair itself, which can stop the hair loss.
97. If your diet isn’t great, it can really affect the health and appearance of your hair since excess salt, sugar, caffeine and carbonated beverages sap magnesium from your diet. Toth suggests a handful of nuts before bed, since magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant and it might help you get some sleep. Which rocks because hair grows fastest at night.
96. Want your hair to be naturally shiny? Fish oil brings the glow from within, giving you strong strands that are naturally glossy and healthy.
95. The health and strength of your hair also depends on the types of tools you use. A natural boar bristle brush helps spread sebum down the hair shaft, which results in a softer, smoother finish.
94. High levels of chlorine may be to blame for rough texture , dryness and frizz/lack of manageability. Add a shower head with a filter to remove chlorine for a softer, more manageable style.
93. The health of your scalp is incredibly important, since a clogged scalp from product buildup can slow the growth and distribution of nourishment to the rest of your strands. Try a scalp treatment or shampoo and conditioner that focuses on clarifying the scalp for softer, healthier hair.
92. If your hair is oily, a homemade treatment can help remove excess sebum for a more manageable texture. Combine 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, 1/2 of a crushed avocado, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and and 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise, then apply to hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Massage through your scalp for five minutes, then rinse with warm water and shampoo with a deep cleansing shampoo for healthy, oil-free strands.
91. Also, a simple vinegar rinse can be made with one tbsp of vinegar mixed with 2-3 cups of warm water. Pour the mixture over the scalp, then add shampoo and massage in to remove product buildup. Rinse a few times, then condition for shiny, amazing hair.
90. Women with curly hair should look for a cleansing conditioner to remove dirt and cleanse curls while nourishing your hair.
MORE: How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?
89. Speaking of curls, those with curly/natural hair should steer clear of products that contain silicones and/or sulfates, since they can dry out your hair and disrupt the curl pattern (hello, frizz.) Cleansers with natural oils, plant extracts and butters are all effective at maintaining the health of your hair.
88. Hydration is the key to avoiding frizz in the first place, so girls with curly hair should apply a protein-based treatment at least 2-3 times a month to maintain the moisture balance of your curls.
87. Leave-in conditioners are essential to maintaining the structure of curls and natural strands, particularly in warmer weather. Look for a cream-based formula for thicker/coarse hair types, or a leave-in spray for finer textures.
86. Also, hair masques packed with natural oils can help coat the strands of normal to dry hair to help prevent the dreaded frizz from striking when the humidity rises. Once a week is essential, especially if you heat style your hair.
85. If you want sleek, smooth strands, you can also get a keratin treatment to make your strands sleek and strong. No need for the salon price tag, either: there are home kits that can get similar results for a fraction of the cost.
84. UV filters are essential for protecting your hair from sun damage. Look for products that contain these shields to neutralize free radicals and the sun’s harmful rays from damaging the color and texture of your hair.
83. Usually, when hair starts to frizz, we try to combat the texture by adding more heat, which makes matter worse in the long run. Try a frizz-free serum with added heat protection to stop the madness before it starts while protecting your fragile mane.
82. A thickening spray added to your regular blowout routine can help prolong the style and combat the onset of frizz. Just add it to the roots, then blow your hair out using a round brush for a blowout with staying power.
81. Girls with curls should follow this general rule for styling by the owners of Miss Jessie’s Curly Hair Salon: the thicker the curl, the thicker the consistency of the styling product.
80. Also, long, layered styles work best for curly manes since they allow the weight of the hair to help control the curl. Any bangs should be face framing.
79. If you’re looking for a new haircut that will flatter your face, the “lob” (long, layered bob) is all the rage and shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to looking amazing on everyone, it has tons of styling options and works with pretty much all hair textures. It’s also low maintenance.
78. Afraid of getting a bad haircut? Be sure to bring two photos with you of the style you want to your styling appointment, and have a talk about texture and maintenance before the scissors come out. You’ll be happier in the long run.
77. Ready to take it all off? We’re still in favor of the pixie cut, which came back to life when Emma Watson famously let celebrity hairstylist Rodney Cutler shear off her Harry Potter-approved length. Have a talk about texture with your stylist in advance, but take the plunge if you’re feeling inspired. We love it!
76. To cut bangs or not to cut bangs? This is the never-ending question with pretty much all of us, but bangs are the easiest way to change your look without drastically altering your style (or your hair color). Blunt bangs are our favorites since they’re versatile and uber-chic.
75. By the way, you do not – we repeat, DO NOT – have to book an appointment for a bang trim. You can trim your own bangs…you know, for free.
74. Girls with haircuts (especially those who are growing out cuts and/or bangs) know that you will disagree with your hair some mornings. Keep a cute barrette on hand to sweep hair away from your face in style.
74. If you’re rocking a short hairstyle, you need to have an arsenal of styling products so you can work your ‘do depending on your mood.  Styling paste and pomades are a must.
73. If you have any hair length, we implore you to have dry shampoo on hand. Not only is it the fastest way to prolong any hairstyle, it’s a massive timesaver when you have to do your ‘do and dash.
72. If flat hair is your problem, there are great volumizing sprays and mousses out there to help you turn up the volume on your style. We’re also partial to the upside-down blowdry technique, followed by some intense spraying for higher hair.
71. Thinner hair can also be made thicker with shampoos, conditioners and styling products to help make the hair strand a bit wider in appearance.
70.  Oh, and big, textured hair was all over the runways this past season, so we’re all about the big hair for spring/summer 2013. Thickening hairspray helps with the volume and texture we’re craving.
69. We love red-carpet worthy waves. We also love that you can get them at home with a brief, easy tutorial.
68. Adding mousse to the midlengths of your hair is one of the keys to getting those boho glam waves that Kate Hudson is always rocking (and which we envy regularly), according to her hair guru, celebrity hairstylist David Babaii.
67. You can get beachy waves all year, by the way. There are amazing beach sprays that can help you get that perfectly-tousled, wavy texture even if you’re landlocked.
66. There are some mornings where bedhead just naturally happens. For all other occasions, apply lightweight mousse to towel-dried hair the night before, then twist hair into a bun. Release in the morning and lightly spray for I-woke-up-like-this texture.
65. There are also great texturizers that can give you bedhead results, no pillow required. Just apply, work through and style.
64. If you’re considering hair extensions for added length, go in for a consultation to ensure you get the style that’s right for your hair and lifestyle, says Senior Stylist at Ted Gibson Salon and Weave Specialist Sade.
63. Care for hair extensions just like your regular hair, but if your sewn-in extensions seem to take forever to dry, Sade recommends only conditioning your hair at the roots to cut down on drying time.
62. Hair color is an amazing way to change and enhance your looks. You can get amazing results (even platinum blonde and ombre) with home hair color kits you can pick up at your local drugstore.
61. A color-treated shampoo and conditioner is essential to maintaining your hair color. Remember: hair color is an investment. Protect it at all costs.
60. Also, avoid sulfates when caring for your hair color, as they can cause the hair color to break down and rinse right out.
59. When dying your hair at home, remember to try to stick to shades that are 2-3 shades lighter or darker than your own hair color. Anything more drastic can lead to less-than-desired results.
58. Ombre hair means your ends can be super fragile. Be sure to deep condition and repair them (along with the rest of your hair) regularly to maintain their strength, says celebrity hairstylist George Papanikolas.
57. Make sure your hair texture and styling history will support ombre bleaching, especially if you have darker hair, which will result in an orange tint at the ends that will simply break off.
56. You can also try the multicolored hair color trend, no matter what your hair color and/or length may be. Stay away from tones that mimic the undertones of your face, says Bumble & Bumble colorist Zoe Wiepert.
55. Want to try the multicolored hair trend for a night? Temporary hair chalk and spray can help you dabble in a color (or twelve) here and there, then wash it out in the morning and start again.
54. When using hair chalk to alter your hair color, be sure to shake fingers through your hair as some of the chalk will fall away. Also, avoid wearing white tops for obvious reasons.
53. We believe that hair color should help nourish your hair whenever possible, so look for at-home kits and in-salon processes that infuse the hair with much-needed oils to protect structure and maintain its much-needed moisture balance. L’Oreal Professionel INOA is fantastic for in-salon results, while Garnier Olia can help replicate these results at home.
52. Platinum blonde is one of the hardest hair colors to achieve, and one of the harshest processes. Be sure to add moisture regularly with deep conditioning masques that replace lost moisture and support the health of your strands.
51. Also, don’t wash your platinum blonde hair for 24-48 hours after processing, to preserve the color and to keep hair from drying out.
50. Trying to preserve your gorgeous hair color in the sun? Nothing works like covering your hair to protect it. Sun hats and scarves are your friends.
49. Root touch-up products can help conceal grown-out hair color in between salon visit. They’re also great at getting two-tone hair color results, if you’re feeling a little adventurous advises celebrity hair colorist and Clairol Color Director Marie Robinson.
48. Restoring masks are amazing for repairing the damage we do to our hair each week. Get a two-fer and slather yours on at the gym after a workout, then sit in the steamroom for 20 minutes for an instant salon-quality steam treatment.
47. You can also apply your favorite hair mask at the beginning of your favorite 30-minute tv program, then rinse when the credits start to roll. That’s the maximum amount of time you should leave it on. Any longer and it actually removes moisture from the hair and starts to break down protein, which is the exact opposite of what you want.
46. Coconut oil is an astounding hair conditioner. Solid versions sold at grocery stores make for a great repair treatment, with heat added or alone.
45. Olive oil is also a time-tested treatment to help soften and condition both hair and skin. You can slather on gently-warmed olive oil (not hot, though,) then throw on a shower cap and leave for up to 30 minutes for a great hot oil treatment.
44. Concerned about animal products in your hair regime? Not to worry: there are plenty of vegan-friendly options to help with your cleansing, conditioning and styling needs.
43. If you chemically straighten your hair, look for products with keratin that will help strengthen your hair and repair any damage.
42. Also, if you’re a Brazilian blowout addict, try converting to a formaldehyde-free process to get the results without doing as much harm – or endanger health.
41. There are also plenty of styling tools, from straightening combs to root straighteners, that can help you get straighter locks without making the permanent commitment.
40. Straightening your hair up toward the ceiling can add volume to your straighter ‘do, advises the genius stylists at Wonderland Beauty Parlour.
39. Washing your hair too much can literally take the essential oils right out of your hair if it’s thick, coarse or naturally curly. Opt to shampoo 1-2 times a week if you have this hair type. Normal to oily strands? Suds away.
38. Ionic hair dryers are some of the best options for protecting your hair from damage by using negative ions to eliminate water molecules instead of cycled heat. They’re available at pretty much every price point, so we’d really suggest you get one if you blow your hair dry.
37. Moisture is the key to combatting both frizz and lifeless hair. Be sure to a moisturizing treatment and styling products to your routine if you have dry hair.
36. Hair repairs itself at night while you’re sleeping, so why not try an overnight repair serum to help get the most bang for your…well, out of your sleep?
35. The ponytail doesn’t have to be boring. There are plenty of rocker-inspired ways to make this style un-boring, like side angles and varied parts.
34. You can also roll the sides of your hair before you pull it back for a romantic take on the ponytail style.
33. An updo is the best way to instantly add poise to any look. There are plenty of red carpet options that work for any day or evening occasion.
32. Oh, and yes, lovely girls with curls, the updo is also for you. Try it for a new alternative style if you haven’t already!
31. Styling cream is a must for updos with staying power. You might also consider a good flexible hold hairspray to secure the style.
30. The topknot is also not going anywhere anytime soon. Does your hair need a little help in the volume department. Snip the end off an old, clean sock and roll it for an instant donut you can place over the base of your ponytail, then roll and pin your hair over it for instant style.
29. Sleek styles get a boost from glossing creams and pomades that give hair smoothness and incredible shine, which is key to the style.
28. A deep side part adds interest to any ponytail or off-the-face style. Try one to amp up the attitude on your next basic style.
27. If you’re in a pinch and you need to control your mane, borrow pomade from your boyfriend. Their formulas have great staying power and serious hold.
26. A good shine serum can help add gloss and a healthy appearance to any style. They can also prevent frizz by closing in any gaps in the hair cuticle. In short, they’re amazing and we love them.
25. Did you dash out of the house without your headband and now your hair is all sorts of crazy? Create your own by braiding a crown across the front of middle of your head, then secure behind your ear with a bobby pin or inside a ponytail or updo with an elastic. Done!
24. Even though Gossip Girl is gone, the power of the headband (long live Blair Waldorf) remains strong and a quick solution to get your hair out of your face at a moment’s notice while adding polish to any look.
23. Your jewelry can help add a lot of lift to your hairstyle. The rise of the ear cuff is picking up speed, and it adds incredible allure to any updo.
22. We love a good headpiece for music festival-inspired style, whether your rocking out on the grass or not.
21. We also can’t fight the allure and siren song of a great floral crown, particularly when there’s a band to be heard.
20. When in doubt, a good fedora not only blocks the sun, but it helps tame your mane.
19. Dryer sheets can help prevent static electricity and flyaways.
18. Reactivating mist can help revive fallen curls if they’re looking a bit droopy.
17. Volumizing dry shampoo can lift the roots of any fallen style and can help transform your hair from day to night in a flash.
16. If you heat style your hair, you MUST protect your hair from the damage of heat styling tools. A heat protectant spray is amazing for this purpose. Those with dry hair should also avoid any styling products containing alcohol, which can dry out hair and make it more fragile and prone to damage.
15. Remove as much moisture as you can from your hair to cut down on drying time. Also, wring and squeeze water from your hair with a towel, don’t “rough it up” by rubbing vigorously, which can fray the cuticle of already-damaged hair, causing frizz and split ends.
14. Also, we clearly love a ball cap with attitude for off-duty hair styling days.
13. If you want volume and curl without the heat of a hair dryer (and who does in the summer?), we’d recommend going super old school with a roller set. Self-adhesive rollers can grab hair on their own and keep it lifted while it dries into the perfect shape.
12. When using a curling iron, be sure to keep the setting on medium and only hold the hair for a few seconds, or you could run the risk of, you know, burning it off.
11. We love the Gatsby-inspired jeweled headbands that are back in style. Add one for a little Daisy-inspired glamour for your look.
10. Can you make your own hair accessories? Absolutely! Old earrings can be added to pins, bracelets can become hair ties. You have plenty of options if you’re feeling crafty.
9. Many hair ties are cool enough to double as jewelry for a versatile fashion look that can inspire a new style in an instant.
8. If you have a special occasion (like a wedding) and you need to add style to your hair, fresh flowers are not only a cheap way to add instant glamour, they can be a lifesaver since they’re most likely on hand.
7. If you’re in a pinch and you need to tame your hair, body lotion rubbed onto your hands can help tame flyaways and create a sleek updo or ponytail.
6. If you’re creating an updo or working with bobby pins and/or hair elastics, pick pins and elastics that are as close to your own hair color as possible so they disappear into the style.
5. For versatility and ease, you can’t be a good scarf for hair styling possibilities. Tie one up at the crown of your head or below the nape of your neck for a little retro-inspired glamour.
4. We also live for the timeless glamour of a great turban, which can help protect your hair from the sun while it provides an instant style upgrade to any look.
3. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is give yourself a makeover. A new cut, new color or a slice of new bangs may be just what you need. Just be sure you’re in a good mood when you do it. Most “breakovers” are regretted almost instantly.
2. Have trouble remembering to book your hair appointments? Book up to three months up to a year in advance while you’re at the salon to make sure that you’re both committed to the relationship.
1. Honestly, the best thing you can ever do is embrace your natural texture and learn to love what you’re working with!

10 Best Hairstyles to Survive a Heat Wave

10 Best Hairstyles to Survive a Heat Wave

Are you looking for Pinterest Hairstyles For Fall instead?

Sometimes we feel like we’re living a double life. In one, we’ve got smooth, shiny, manageable hair, controlled without a huge amount of effort. In the other, we’re Hermione pre-blowout. The difference between our hair indoors and out during the summer is hard to over-emphasize. Luckily, Pinterest is a thing: braids, ponies, buns and twists are all doable either at home or on the go (mostly), and the best part is, we almost don’t mind the humidity when the poof looks intentional. The second best part is that our hair is off our neck, but it’s a close, “Lochte-Phelps” kind of second for sure.

5 Unconventional Things That Make You Prettier

Any beauty-crazed gal knows the ins and outs of beauty products and fancy tools. But, many of us (yes, MDC gals included) aren’t as educated on the products that make us pretty that you can’t find in the beauty aisle. Check out these five little gems that will definitely surprise you…and more importantly, change your beauty game for good! Enjoy!

5 Unconventional Things That Make You Prettier

1. Humidifier
Although it’s typically a go-to when you’re feeling stuffed-up and gross, humidifiers are also the ultimate moisturizers and hydrators for your skin. These steamy devices are great at keeping your skin supple, especially in the winter months when the air is dry and windy. Leave your humidifier on as you sleep and you’ll be waking up to lovely, hydrated skin. It brings new meaning to the term “beauty sleep!”

2. Silk Pillowcase
Consider this an excuse to splurge on fancy new pillowcases! Silk does wonders for your skin and your hair! Because it’s a natural material, it’s hypoallergenic (good!) and it’s also packed with amino acids (really good!). Did we mention it absorbs moisture and adjusts to all temperatures? (Really, really good!) That means your skin won’t be sticking to a sweaty pillowcase and accumulating pore-clogging oils, while your hair stays soft and static free as you snooze. Yes, please!

3. Water Purifier
Shower time is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine. Showering the right way can mean the difference between dry, brittle hair and hair with mega shine! Unfiltered, hard water contains tons of chlorine and toxins, which can really take their toll on your skin and strands. This is why water purifiers in the form of showerhead filters are HUGE. These little bad boys help improve hair and skin hydration and increase shine and manageability.

4. Baby Powder
Why should babies have all the fun? Indulge in your inner infant and do a little beautifying! Baby powder is great for absorbing oil and it can also help step up your lash game! Get faux lashes without the “faux” by dipping a cotton swab in baby powder and coating lashes after applying mascara (after). Then apply another coat of mascara and, voila, thick, lovely lashes will magically appear!

5. Coconut Oil
If Mother Nature had a beauty store, coconut oil would be her star product. Loaded with essential vitamins and nutrients, coconut oil is the ultimate moisturizer for your skin and hair. Use it as an overnight hair mask or as a moisturizer for your face and body. You can also mix it with a little sugar and you’ve got yourself a scrub!
